How can I be sure the footwear solution I have in place is right for the hazards in my environment?
Select suitable PPE footwear bearing the CE or UKCA mark with an appropriate category of the protection according to the risks determined in your environment. Then conduct a trial. From a trial you will gather important information relevant to your workplace. This will tell you firstly if the products fit and are comfortable (will ensure they can be worn throughout the working day without discomfort). Your workforce will be able provide information about the performance of the footwear for slip – any slip incidents and importantly any near misses, but also subjective feelings of stability in the environment. Any issues around your site such as in areas outdoors – where slip resistant footwear may struggle to give traction. Any issue of transference of dirt and debris from one area of the site to another (Particularly important in food industry). Don’t forget additional needs that have not been considered in the risk assessment, eg. toe caps, inserts, water resistance.
A trial may give you an idea of how well the footwear will perform over time, how long it lasts and therefore the likely cost.
