The UK Slip Resistance Group was formed some 20 years ago by a small group of people interested in pedestrian slipping. It was run by RAPRA (Rubber and Plastics Research Association) and meetings were held four times a year at Shawbury in Shropshire where RAPRA is based. The Slip Resistance Group has been responsible for furthering the understanding of pedestrian slip matters and for introducing the Four S rubber as an alternative slider material to the TRL rubber.  It has also published a set of guidelines as a methodology for conducting slip resistance testing.

In January 2002 the members of UKSRG decided to become a fully independent organization. A constitution was drawn up, three officers were elected to carry out the work which had previously been undertaken by RAPRA staff. RAPRA remains in the group and the previous Chairman, Ivan James, has been made an honorary member.

Aims

The UKSRG aims to further the understanding of pedestrian slipping throughout the UK and elsewhere. In so doing it will promote those methods of testing which have been shown to reliably demonstrate the true slip potential of flooring materials.

Its members are active on the relevant committees of BSI, CEN and ISO, and through members such as the Health and Safety Laboratory have contacts worldwide. We also encourage like-minded organizations and individuals from abroad to become overseas members in order that both countries can learn from each other and what is going on elsewhere in the world.
